About

This blog is dedicated to sharing our moments of joy, growth, and hope through the journey of family life and music therapy.

When I think about who I am, and what I hope others see from the other side is a wife and mother in love with her job, one who is passionate about music and music therapy, one who thrives on being around people, and though life is full of highs and lows, one who loves journeying through this life.

I love being a wife to my husband Scott, a mom to my three children, Zac, Adelyn, and Lincoln. I am also a board-certified music therapist and received a degree in music therapy from Sam Houston State University in 2006.  In this program we had the wonderful opportunity to experience working in many different settings including pre-school, special education, medical hospitals, psychiatric centers, and geriatrics. I was also fortunate to work as an intern at a psychiatric hospital in 2006 here in San Antonio.

After graduation I began working with special needs adults and special education in a local school district. When I think about my time spent there, I remember a line from the song Son of Man from the Tarzan soundtrack. "In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn."  It is my hope that I helped the children there, but they may never know how much they have taught those of us working with them. After our 3rd baby was born, I decided it was time to stay home full time and I am grateful that I have this opportunity. Since then, I have opened up a piano studio in our home and although I am not currently doing music therapy, I am enjoying this little change and teaching my students really brings me joy. I can also have my littlest guy at home with me.

My passion is working with children especially in early childhood and early elementary school.  In music therapy we use music to reach goals of bringing about improvements in behavior, motor skills, social skills, communication/speech, emotional health, and intellectual development/academics.  I have recently focused a great deal on using sound, rhythm, and music to help with literacy and encouraging a love of learning through play and the use of all sensory systems.   I am also very passionate about mental health for children. I am not perfect at it by any means and still see myself as a learner, but I sure enjoy it.

As we expect in life, there has been a tremendous amount of ups and downs, learning and growth since my internship at the state hospital, graduation and marriage to my husband in 2006, to having our children, to careers, and participating in ministry at our church.

Working at the state hospital was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life.  I did, however have many moments of joy and I would not trade those learning experiences and moments of seeing a whole new world of very misunderstood pain and hardship that other people suffer through. Both Scott and I have also struggled with anxiety, each in our own way. Difficult circumstances and situations out of our control have come our way that threaten our family life, but when we pull through we are strengthened in our relationships and also in knowing how to handle more in the future. I have discovered over the past 15 years that I am all about community. I get energy from people, my church community, friends, family, and of course my husband, and children. Witnessing the precious growing minds of children is one of the delights of my heart.

Sometimes my thoughts come out much more clearly and fluidly in writing than in my verbal speech so I find joy and greater understanding of life when I journal or share here.

It is an honor to have you here as I share these thoughts, feelings, and stories. Thank you.
